Launch of the project
The Evangelical Church of Friends has worked for peace and community development since its establishment in Burundi in 1934. Through its eagerness to preach the Gospel of Jesus by building local churches, but also by caring about the development of the country through the realization education and professional training projects by building schools, seminars, hospitals and dispensaries, it is among the non-state institutions bringing change and sustainable development in Burundi and elsewhere.
The Church has joined in supporting programs to support peace and community development initiatives through projects for healing past trauma, preventing violence, and peaceful resolution of conflicts by conducting and facilitating training in this area.
The Evangelical Church of Friends supports the development of the most deprived through projects for raising small livestock by providing goats, distribution of rabbits, as well as through projects for the construction of drinking water sources.
It was then that on March 16, 2024, the Church joined the Government's awareness programs for the breeding of small livestock to cope with poverty and to fertilize arable land, by officially launching a project entitled “WIDOWS RESILIENCE AND FAMILY DEVELOPMENT PROJECT”. This project will make it possible to reach a figure of 2000 widows or widowers including the families of the most deprived and the Batwa community for a period of one year.
The project begins in the commune of Ruhororo in the Province of NGOZI (the localities of RWAMIKO and RUYAGA) and will extend to other provinces or communes depending on whether the rabbit breeding chain continues to expand. In this fight against poverty, we would like each family to be able to develop from rabbit breeding and to manage to meet the educational needs of school children, to self-finance through the breeding of small livestock, also to continue to live together and unite more. Burundian women are highlighted for contributing to family development.
Thus, 96% of beneficiaries are women. Each beneficiary family will redistribute to 2 rabbits (female and male) wanting to ensure the continuity of a distribution chain in Christian communities first but also the community in general. Project coordination will work together with the local church to ensure monitoring and dissemination to ensure the continuity of the breeding chain.
The funding for this project comes from a connection made by one of the members of the Evangelical Church of Friends, Salomon NTIBAHARIRE. We would like to thank him and invite other people to contribute to the development of the community, and that of the members of the Evangelical Friends Church in particular.
